Initial Workspace Setup Guide

Complete guide to setting up your Nami workspace after installation

2 min read

After installing Nami from the Slack App Directory and signing in with Slack OAuth, follow this recommended order of operations to get your workspace ready for your first performance cycle.

Step 1: Sync Your Slack Workspace

Navigate to Dashboard > Team and click the Sync from Slack button. Nami automatically imports all active members from your Slack workspace, pulling in display names and profile photos.

Info

Slack sync only imports active users. Deactivated Slack accounts are skipped. You can re-sync at any time to pick up new hires.

Step 2: Create Departments

Create your organizational departments (e.g., Engineering, Marketing, Sales, People) from the Dashboard > Team page. Every user should belong to a department for accurate analytics and cycle scoping.

Step 3: Define Job Levels

Set up your leveling framework under Dashboard > Admin > Functions. Job levels (e.g., IC1 through IC6, M1 through M3) are used in competency matrices and calibration views. Common structures include:

  • Individual Contributor track: IC1 (Junior) through IC6 (Principal)
  • Management track: M1 (Team Lead) through M3 (Director)

Step 4: Assign Managers

For each team member, assign their direct manager via the user edit page or through a CSV import. Manager assignments determine:

  • Who receives manager review assignments during cycles
  • Who can view direct report goals and review history
  • The org chart hierarchy

Warning

Manager assignments must be in place before launching a cycle. Without them, manager and upward reviews cannot be generated.

Step 5: Assign Roles

Each user needs one of four system roles: Admin, HR, Manager, or User (displayed as "Employee" in some contexts). Roles control what data a user can see and which dashboard features are available. Assign roles on each user's profile page or in bulk via CSV.

Tip

Start by assigning Admin to yourself and HR to your People team. Managers are automatically suggested based on who has direct reports, but you should confirm these manually.

Step 6: Import via CSV (Optional)

If you need to set departments, job titles, levels, and managers in bulk, use Dashboard > Team > Import. Prepare a CSV with columns for email, department, job title, level, and manager email. The importer validates data before applying changes.

  1. Sync users from Slack
  2. Create departments
  3. Define job levels and functions
  4. Assign managers to every team member
  5. Set user roles (Admin, HR, Manager, User)
  6. Run a test CSV import if using bulk data
  7. Verify the org chart looks correct

Once these steps are complete, your workspace is ready to create competency frameworks and launch your first performance cycle.
